Circa 1918-1922 Deadstock Hanes Union Suits
An exceptionally rare and highly collectible early 20th-century Hanes Athletic Union Suit by Hanes / P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Circa 1918-1922. Preserved complete in its original retail box with original printed insert. This piece represents a remarkable survival of American textile and underwear history from the World War I–early interwar period.
The garment is constructed from a fine, lightweight waffle-knit cotton, featuring a three-button front placket, early sewn-in Hanes label, and period-correct natural cotton tone. Buttons are made of small bone. The original box showcases early Hanes branding with an illustrated factory scene and period typography, along with the printed insert detailing product information and sizing instructions.
Complete examples like this — garment, box, and paperwork together — are exceedingly scarce.
Garment remains structurally excellent with no holes or repairs. Moderate age-appropriate patina and faint discoloration consistent with over 100 years of age. Buttons intact and original. Box shows expected wear: edge wear, surface patina, and minor losses consistent with age. Insert remains legible and intact.
